TINA CANE
When I was appointed Poet Laureate of Rhode Island in November 2016, I inherited a monthly column space in The Providence Journal. When I took over the space in 2017, I introduced myself to the public on the second Sunday of January. For the rest of the year, however, I chose to showcase other Rhode Island poets by inviting them to guest-write for the second Sunday space. As writers from varied backgrounds and all walks of life, their contributions have been humorous, poignant, thought-provoking and insightful. A single poet's perspective can be valuable, but this broad spectrum of American voices has turned out even richer than I had imagined. Since 2018, I have continued to invite poets and people from other places and walks of life to write for this space on topics like democracy, education, and the first amendment. I am grateful for their contributions. Check it out!
